About the EVIDENCE project

Although evidence-based guidelines for the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), central venous catheter-related infection (CVC-RI) and surgical site infection (SSI) have been published, there seems to be a gap between these guidelines and daily nursing practice. Reasons for nurses’ non-adherence are not yet fully understood, but a lack of knowledge regarding the guidelines may contribute to this low compliance.

In August 2005, we started developing a questionnaire for evaluating knowledge of evidence-based guidelines for the prevention of VAP. This questionnaire was distributed and collected during the annual congress of the Flemish Society for Critical Care Nurses (Ghent, November 25, 2005). We collected 638 questionnaires (response rate 74.6%). The average score was disappointing and we started to ask ourselves many questions. How would nurses in other European countries perform on the same knowledge test? Would Flemish (and European) intensive care nurses know more about other evidence-based guidelines for infection prevention? Could e-learning have a positive influence on knowledge and daily practice? The concept of EVIDENCE was born.

Currently, three multiple choice questionnaires have been developed. Thanks to our national representatives, the questionnaires concerning prevention of VAP and CVC were distributed and collected in 22 European countries. Papers on the results of these surveys have been submitted for publication. A questionnaire concerning prevention of SSI was distributed and collected during the annual congress of the Flemish Society for Critical Care Nurses (Ghent, November 23, 2007) and collected the same day. We collected 650 questionnaires (response rate 80.3%). The questionnaire is now being tested on integrity and will also be distributed through Europe in the near future.

Guided by the questionnaires’ results, a website-based e-learning platform concerning infection control and prevention will be constructed for intensive care nurses.
